Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have questions about the financial industry, regulations in Canada, how to find the best advisor for you, or specifics about our office or brokerage? Have a look through the frequently asked questions below, or use the form at the bottom of this page to ask us directly.
Where is your office located?
Our office is located in downtown Courtenay at the bottom of Mission Hill in the Braidwood Plaza across from the Hyundai dealership. View map here.
Why didn't I receive a contribution receipt for my TFSA?
TFSA stands for “Tax-Free Savings Account,” which is not to be confused with an RRSP or “Registered Retirement Savings Plan.” The money that you put into a TFSA does not count as a contribution against your income like an RRSP contribution does. Instead, the money that you take out of a TFSA is tax-free– meaning that you do not have to pay any capital gains tax when selling an asset or upon withdrawal.
Can I see my account value online?
Yes! Previously, online accounts were administered through Wealthtracker. In 2016, HollisWealth began to move their clients over to the Scotia Online system. Not a Scotiabank client? Don’t worry! Clients with only HollisWealth accounts will see a custom HollisWealth only online system upon logging in. Contact your advisor to find out how to be set-up for online access!
How do I know if I am paying too much for my advisor?
According to new regulations, clients must be notified of the commissions their advisors are receiving for handling their accounts. HollisWealth has taken the lead on this and all commissions are labelled right in your trading confirmation slip. If you think you are paying too much, or don’t know what you are paying for, we urge you to contact your advisor today and have them better explain it to you. Our advisors are completely transparent with their clients regarding fees and commissions and make sure they understand the impact of all fees payable in their accounts.
How do I know which advisor is right for me?
Finding the correct financial advisor for your goals is crucial to success in investing and saving money. We recommend interviewing a few different advisors and getting a feel for their personality, temperaments and willingness to sit down with you and explain their process. Asking your friends and family to refer you to an advisor is one of the best ways to find someone that you trust. We invite you to come into our office at any time during office hours to sit down with any one of our advisors at no obligation to you.
